2010-03-22 - The very first 110/20kV utility substation now equipped with the new Relion® 630 series protection and control IEDs was taken into use in January 2010 in Voyri, Finland. Improved safety and increased reliability of power distribution are the two main benefits of the retrofit project. The 630 series offers flexibility and performance for demanding utility distribution and industrial applications.

Retrofitting of protection and control relays prolongs the life-cycle of the switchgear
“The prolonged life-cycle of the switchgear was an additional important driver for us to invest in new protection and control devices”, Mr. Rintamaki continues. The upgrade prolongs the life-cycle of the MEKA 24 switchgear from Strömberg, installed in the late 70’s, by a further 20 years.
REA arc protection system increases personnel safety and protects assets in a substationThe new protection relays in the 630 series handle feeder protection, transformer protection and bay control of the power distribution and have much more functionality compared to the old J-series relays type, i.e. SPAA 3_5 J40, which were replaced after having being some 30 years in use. Additionally the switchgear was equipped with REA arc protection system, which will further increase personnel safety in the substation.
